POEMS/ Prayer

Prayer
may I change
from a tethered falcon
in leather-gloved captivity
hard-gripped
until fingers open
with the gift of new flight
may I circle
wide
into endless sky
watch movement
deep down in tall grass
written in the sound of sparrow wings
or bound in bird song fallen quiet
may I be
the spirit of a wind-hover
high shadow
observing a mouse
as it nibbles the grass
a bull frog
hopping pond-wards
a rabbit’s tuft of fur
left on a thorned branch
in its scramble to find shelter
a fish diving
beneath sweet water rushes
may my eyes open
like a raptor
un-spelling words
thoughts buried blind
on the blank page
