Song
by Phyllis Beck Katz
Today I read a story
of a woman paralyzed –
a stroke
had left her lame
and speechless,
her limbs and tongue
no longer hearing
the message of her brain.
She had no way to tell
her tenders
she understood
their words,
wept and raged
to be heard
and still she could not
until – against all hope
she did find speech
in song
with words articulate and strong
for she could sing
both melody and lyric
as clearly as she always had.
So when I read her story
yes, I thought,
it’s when the mind
awakens
to find its innermost
craving to be heard
we gain the power
to break our silences,
find the hidden source
of speech
where poems are born
and song.
